April 28 Board Report

Lots to report from April 28th's Board meeting! A presentation from Wacousta, new name for Old Wacousta, leases for community partners, a new 7/8 reading and writing curriculum, bid award for the Delta Center gym, and more. Let's break it down!

But before I jump in, we need your input! We are growing as a district, while basically everybody else is shrinking. Here is the slide deck  from Dr. Barnes about our needs that he shared with staff, families, and the community at our Capital Improvement Planning Forums.  Healso recorded a summary of the presentation, and you can watch it here.

People attending the forum completed a paper-and-pencil form, but you can submit your input online here.  The online feedback form will close at 11:55 p.m. on Monday, May 11, 2026.

The Board was treated to a presentation from Wacousta, including an amazing musical performance from our student musicians. We then heard from Wacousta administration, faculty, and students. Wacousta's kindergarteners have grown as readers at an incredible pace!

Speaking of Wacousta, "Old Wacousta" is now "Wacousta Commons" and "New Wacousta" is Wacousta Elementary. Thank you to everyone who put in so much thought in this process. I am grateful the Board adopted a policy on how we handle naming our facilities so we could do it in a thoughtful and appropriate manner.

We approved lease agreements with the Grand Ledge Area District Library and Clinton County Sheriff Department for space at Wacousta Commons. We look forward to similar agreement with Wacousta Cooperative Preschool soon!

The Board approved a bid award for the new gym at Delta Center. This was a competitive bid process that included multiple stages and interviews. Thank you to our tremendous administration team for making sure we can get great facilities at a great price (in this case, under our budgeted amount!). We will see construction ongoing well into the 2026-2027 school year.

We also adopted a new reading and writing curriculum for our 7th and 8th graders that builds on our existing elementary curriculum. As anyone with an elementary student knows, we don't do "See Jane run" anymore. Our students are learning to read and write while also gaining general knowledge about amazing topics. Medieval times, Thomas Edison, land forms, Greek mythology, the history of chocolate, are just a few of the topics our students are focusing on while they improve their reading and writing skills. As a parent, when I ask, "What did you do today?" I hear, "Did you know about knights/Pangea/how the lightbulb was invented?!" instead of "not much."
