June 8 Board Meeting Update

The Board of Education met last night, and we had a lot on the agenda! We kicked things off by talking about teaching and learning. We had a robust discussion with our Academic Services leaders. The bottom line: while national trends show drops in student achievement, GLPS is gaining ground. In the last few years, we started a new reading and writing curriculum, and it is paying off. Our Kindergarten and 1st grade Comets are already blowing past our original goals, and our 2nd-6th graders are also making great improvements. Our Academic Services team has set an ambitious goal for literacy, and I expect us to reach that goal.

After that, we conducted our mid-year evaluation for Dr. Barnes. Every November, we do our annual evaluation and discuss goals for the upcoming year. To no one's surprise, Dr. Barnes is thoughtfully addressing everything from district communication to student input in Board operations.

Next, we welcomed A DOZEN new teachers to the district! Though there is a national teacher shortage, GLPS attracted hundreds of applicants for these openings. This community has made GLPS a destination for educators. Thank you to the many teachers who joined us at the meeting, as well as the Principals at Willow Ridge and Holbrook!

Later, we approved the lease agreement with Wacousta Cooperative Preschool for space in Wacousta Commons. We wrapped up some business with the 2018 Bond, and paid some bills.

We closed out the meeting by once again celebrating the Class of 2026! Here's another photo of some of your Board of Education before heading into the ceremony.

We're working hard to live our Mission: Growing Learners, Preparing Students. I'm #proudtobeacomet
